It rained all morning. Five people swear they never left the porch. The ground says one of them is lying. Can you find the killer before you scroll down?

Quick facts
🕵️ Type: Picture detective puzzle
⏱️ Time needed: about 1 minute
🎯 Difficulty: Easy to medium
👀 Skill tested: Observation and logic
Some mysteries do not need a clever trick. The answer is something so ordinary that most people look right past it. In this detective puzzle, the weather is the biggest clue, and your job is to notice what the rain has done to each suspect.
Here is the case. On a stormy morning, the village baker was found lying in the garden behind the old tea house. The rain was so heavy that the whole garden turned into mud and puddles. When the police arrived, they found five people on the long wooden veranda, labelled A, B, C, D and E. All of them say the same thing: “We were here under the roof the whole morning, drinking tea and playing cards. Nobody went outside.” One of them is lying, and that person is the killer.

Look Closely: Who Is the Killer on This Rainy Morning?
Take a careful look at the five suspects. Suspect A is an old man in a green cardigan holding a teacup. Suspect B is a woman in a blue dress and white apron. Suspect C is a young man in a checked shirt holding playing cards. Suspect D is an elegant lady in a purple hat, and suspect E is a man with a moustache in a brown jacket. They all look relaxed, and they all agree on the same story.
Here is a small hint: rain leaves traces on everyone who walks through it, especially at the bottom of the picture. Ignore the faces for a moment and look at the shoes, the clothes, and the ground around each suspect. If all five people really stayed dry under the roof, would everything look the same?
Take your time. A good detective compares all the suspects before pointing a finger at anyone.
Show Answer
The Killer Is Suspect B
Correct Answer: Suspect B (the woman in the blue dress and white apron)
All five suspects say they stayed under the veranda and never went out into the rain. If that were true, all five would look dry and clean. Here is what the picture shows:
- A, C, D and E: dry clothes, clean shoes, and no mud anywhere near them. Their stories match what we see.
- B: boots covered in fresh mud, mud splashes on the hem of her dress, and a few raindrops still on her shoulders. A line of muddy footprints also leads from the garden straight to where she is standing.
Suspect B clearly walked through the muddy garden, which means she lied about staying under the roof. The killer is B.
Why Weather Clues Work So Well in Mysteries
Rain, mud, snow, and heat are favourite tools for mystery writers because they leave marks that are hard to hide. A person can lie about where they were, but wet shoes, muddy boots, and a dripping umbrella cannot lie. That is why detective stories so often use the weather to catch the culprit.
Here are a few tips for your next picture mystery:
- Read the story first, then check whether the picture agrees with it.
- Look at the ground and the bottom of the picture. Shoes and footprints hide many clues.
- Think about the weather and ask who should be wet, dry, hot, or cold.
- Remember that a clue can be a difference. The suspect who looks unlike the others is often the answer.
Practising puzzles like this makes you more observant in daily life. You start noticing small details that other people miss, and that skill helps in studying, at work, and in everyday decisions.
Did You Spot the Muddy Boots?
If you found the muddy boots and the footprint trail, you are a sharp detective. If you missed them, look at the picture again and notice how clear the clue was once you knew where to look. Good puzzles always hide the answer in plain sight.
